2nd Level University Master in Perioperative Geriatric Medicine
Dear Colleagues,
I’m pleasured to inform you that the registration to the 2nd Level University Master in Perioperative Geriatric Medicine held by the Universities of San Marino and the Catholic University in Rome is now open for the Academic Year 2022-23. The Master, addressed to anesthesiologists, surgeons, geriatricians and graduated nurses is now at its third edition and since the last Academic Year open to non-Italian students; lessons are held in both Italian and English.
The interest toward this discipline, still neglected in the pre- and post-graduation courses, is due to the enormous expansion of geriatric surgery, currently representing almost the 50% of the total surgical activity. It is also due to the lack of dedicated clinical paths in the majority of the European hospitals and to need to reduce the remarkable costs related to postoperative complications (postoperative delirium, functional impairment, loss of independence etc.), that are very frequent but at the same time often preventable through appropriate preventive, evidence-based strategies.
For us anesthesiologists, this Master is a precious tool to realize our role of “perioperative doctors” when dealing with older patients, where the surgical risk evaluation is not assessable through the usual approach (ASA Class and risk related to the surgical procedure) but requires specific knowledge about specific tools such as the Comprehensive Assessment. As geriatricians are not operating in all the European hospitals, acquiring knowledge about these tools represent a precious opportunity to qualify ourselves and to provide appropriate perioperative care to our older patients.
Hoping that this information solicits your professional and doctrinal interest and that of your collaborators, I kindly ask you to spread this information among the ERAS fellows and to directly contact me in case of need of further information.
